597th Transportation Brigade Wins Army Safety Excellence Streamer

“Rapid Support” teams across Eastern Seaboard and Gulf Coast achieve 12 consecutive months accident-free

FORT EUSTIS, Va. — The 597th Transportation Brigade, ARTRANS, has been awarded the Army Safety Excellence Streamer for achieving 12 consecutive months without a serious accident, a milestone driven by the collective vigilance of its safety officer and the dedicated personnel managing critical seaport nodes.

The “Rapid Support” team completed the period from May 1, 2025, to April 30, 2026, with zero Soldier or Civilian Class A or Class B accidents, satisfying the strict requirements of Army Regulation 385-10.

The central driver behind this incident-free year was "Rapid Support" safety officer Mike Tustin, who served as the sole Brigade Safety & Occupational Health Specialist during that timeframe.

To keep safety at the forefront of daily operations, Tustin spearheaded an aggressive, biweekly safety briefing program, providing continuous education by highlighting critical Army initiatives, specialized port safety standards, and practical off-duty home safety topics.

“As a Brigade the 597th has done a tremendous job in minimizing risk, reducing mishaps and ensuring a safe workplace,” said Tustin. “Earning this streamer demonstrates what happens when Soldiers and civilian professionals are genuinely dedicated to looking out for one another.”

Implementing these high safety standards required seamless execution from the Soldiers and Department of the Army (DA) Civilians who work relentlessly across the brigade’s geographic footprints. This includes personnel operating under the 841st Transportation Battalion, managing single-port operations stretching across the Eastern Seaboard to our 842nd Transportation Battalion, who maintain constant watch over vital Gulf Coast gateways, ensuring mission safety across our strategic seaports.

Command Sgt. Maj. Nancy E. Sainz formally accepted the streamer on July 21, 2026, from Tustin, symbolizing the joint triumph of the unit's safety program. While received this summer, the streamer will be officially presented to the entire brigade during its upcoming Organizational Day on Oct. 8, 2026.

“A year with zero Class A or B accidents doesn't happen by luck— it happens through the daily dedication of every Soldier and Civilian in this brigade,” said Sainz. “Winning the Army Safety Excellence Streamer is a testament to the unwavering vigilance of our entire team.”

Sainz stressed the accomplishment proves operational readiness and an unyielding commitment to safety go hand-in-hand.

“By protecting our most valuable asset– our people, we ensure 'Rapid Support' remains elite, professional, and always mission ready,” said Sainz.

The safety streamer authorization remains valid for one year. Leadership emphasized that the continuous partnership between teams on the ground and our brigade safety team will be vital to sustaining this proactive safety culture and maintaining their perfect record in the years ahead.
